OPD (Outpatient Department)
OPD covers medical care that doesn't need hospital admission, such as doctor visits, diagnostic tests and prescribed medicines.
What is OPD?
OPD stands for Outpatient Department. In healthcare and insurance, "OPD care" means any treatment or consultation that does not require admission to a hospital bed. The patient visits a clinic or hospital, sees a doctor, perhaps gets tests done, and goes home the same day.
Common OPD expenses include:
- General physician and specialist consultations
- Diagnostic and lab tests ordered by a doctor
- Prescribed medicines
- Dental treatment and eye checkups or spectacles (where covered)
- Physiotherapy and minor procedures that don't need admission
OPD is the opposite of IPD (inpatient department) care, which involves hospitalisation.
Why it matters for employers
Most standard group health insurance policies in India are designed mainly for hospitalisation. Everyday OPD expenses – which people incur far more often than hospital stays – are usually not covered unless an OPD add-on or a separate OPD benefit is provided.
This means employees often pay for routine care out of their own pockets. Offering OPD benefits can:
- Make the health benefit feel useful all year, not only during a hospital stay
- Encourage people to see a doctor early rather than delaying care
- Support preventive care and management of chronic conditions
How OPD benefits are offered
- OPD cover within or alongside the group policy, with a yearly limit per employee or family
- A health wallet – a fixed amount employees can use across consultations, tests and medicines
- Teleconsultation with general physicians and specialists
- Network discounts on lab tests, pharmacy, dental and vision care
Design choices include annual limits, whether family members are included, and whether claims are cashless at network providers or reimbursed.
Example
An employee develops a persistent cough. With an OPD benefit, she books a teleconsultation, the doctor orders a blood test and chest X-ray at a partner lab, and prescribes medicines delivered from a network pharmacy. The costs are deducted from her OPD wallet, so she pays little or nothing out of pocket, and she does not need to be hospitalised.
