Health & Screening

Preventive Healthcare

Preventive healthcare covers actions such as screening, vaccination and lifestyle support that help prevent illness or catch it early.

What is preventive healthcare?

Preventive healthcare is care aimed at keeping people healthy rather than only treating them once they are unwell. It is usually described in three levels:

What it looks like at work

In an employee context, preventive healthcare commonly includes:

Why it matters for employers

Non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers are a leading cause of illness and death in India, according to the WHO and national health bodies. Many of these conditions develop slowly and can be influenced by lifestyle and early treatment.

For employers, prevention can support a healthier, more present workforce and may help reduce avoidable hospitalisations over time. It also signals care: employees notice when an organization invests in keeping them well, not only in paying claims when they are ill.

Prevention works best when it is continuous. A single camp each year has limited effect unless it leads to follow-up and ongoing support.

Example

A retail chain with stores across several cities runs a yearly cycle: an HRA in the first quarter, screening camps in the second, targeted programs in the third (for example, blood pressure monitoring for staff with high readings), and a review in the fourth. Store employees who cannot attend camps are offered home sample collection.
